Hell's Kitchen is one of my guilty TV pleasures and I love Gordon Ramsay. He wrote this book and he writes like he speaks--I loved it. The book details his childhood, his relationships, his start as a chef, his ups and downs--very good, quick read. Fan of his TV shows will not be disappointed.

I love Kitchen Nightmares and Hell's Kitchen, mostly for the way Chef Ramsay will give such unadulterated feedback. He doesn't sugar coat what doesn't work. But, after he has broken through the crap, he shows tremendous compassion in a real way.

In his book, he tells his story, and you will see just what makes him tick. His broken childhood and family troubles that followed him into adulthood. His learning under some very harsh chefs in their own right. His drive to be among the top chef's in the world of serious cooking.

I wouldn't say this book is great literature: he writes it as if he is telling you a story over a couple of pints. There is a good flow, but sometimes he tends to move about in the flow. This is not an in-depth look, but a man trying to let you know why he always appears to be in a bad mood.

Overall: if you're a fan of his shows, it s worth the read.

As it says it's a "quick read" which meant I was done with it in one afternoon. But it was very interesting and told me some things that I didn't know about Gordon Ramsay from other books I have read. I highly recommend it for your Gordon Ramsay library.

This was an ok book most of the stuff I already knew about Gordon and some surprises

The concepts or terms were repeated over and over: consistency and perfection. Not a surprise considering that these are ideas Ramsay emphasizes over and over again in his television shows.

This memoir is realistic and (usually) consistent in portraying Ramsay's voice. I could be wrong, but I feel like there are a few times where an editor may have rewritten things. In a few instances, Ramsay's voice falls out of the narrative for a while and then comes back in full swing. Because of that issue, I awarded the book four stars.

The book itself is fast-paced and draws the reader into his story of hard work and perseverance. The book is literally about his life and how he ended up in the position that he is in today--and Ramsay doesn't hide from the truth or sugar coat anything. Also refreshing is that he discusses instances when he made mistakes or was wrong, and he is unflinching in his self-criticism.

He frankly discusses his abusive family life during childhood, his desire to learn from some of the best chefs in London and France, and how he began a restaurant empire.

If you are looking for an expose of his current family life or of the "Hell's Kitchen," "The F Word," or "Kitchen Nightmares" shows, then this is not the book for you. He does briefly mention all of these things, but the majority of the book is dedicated to the years of hard work it took to get him to where he is.

Overall, the book is inspiring and exciting to read. Often you will find yourself not believing some of the things that go on behind the restaurant kitchen's closed doors. If you are a fan of Ramsay or just curious about this enigmatic person, you should definitely read this book!

I've watched Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares from the beginning. I'm a bit of a foodie, so I find it very interesting. I always saw Ramsey as a huge egotistical butthead, someone who was so full of himself, someone who screamed, etc. He had a few redeeming moments, but... well, not many. I read this book out of morbid curiosity than anything else, but I walked away with a huge change of heart as far as the author goes. Oh, he has a big ego, he'll admit that. But I think you don't have the level of success that he has had without getting a slightly over-inflated ego. Learning about his childhood and how he rose to where he is today really brings the man more into focus. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this one, but I did. Not just fans of the show will enjoy this, anyone that enjoys memoirs will like it as well.
